Today, the Maldives Tsunami Ready Board has been established to facilitate the implementation of the Tsunami Ready Recognition Program (TRRP), which is administered by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, within the Maldives.
The Maldives Tsunami Ready Board has been formed as a sub-committee under the Disaster Management Steering Committee, which operates under the purview of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The newly formed Maldives Tsunami Ready Board comprises representatives from the National Disaster Management Authority, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the Maldives Police Service, and the Maldivian Red Crescent.
The National Disaster Management Authority will chair this committee, with the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works serving as the Vice-Chair.
The primary objective behind the establishment of this seven-member Tsunami Ready Board is to implement the UNESCO-IOC TRRP program in the Maldives and to effectively coordinate all necessary activities under this program. Furthermore, its responsibilities include ensuring that islands fully meet the standards stipulated by UNESCO and working towards obtaining the UNESCO Tsunami Ready Recognition Certificate for those islands that successfully fulfill these criteria.
This endeavor is integral to achieving the 'Resilient Maldives' objective by 2030, as envisioned by His Excellency the President. Consequently, this represents a crucial international recognition that will significantly contribute to the ongoing efforts aimed at realizing the 'Resilient Maldives' goal.
