In a significant stride towards bolstering disaster response capabilities in the Maldives, a project agreement worth 600 million Japanese yen (US$4 million) was inked under the Japan Grant Aid of the Economic and Social Development Program. The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, marking a pivotal moment in the collaboration between the Maldives and Japan.
The agreement entails the provision of essential firefighting equipment, including 04 fire vehicle, 40 fire extinguisher, 264 water pump, and 01 sludge suction truck, to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Specifically, the fire-fighting vehicles and fire pumps will be entrusted to the Maldives National Defense Force Fire and Rescue Service, aimed at enhancing their capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to fire incidents across the city and province.
Developed in close partnership with the NDMA and the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka, the project materialized shortly after President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu assumed office. Notably, it stands as the fastest project of its kind initiated by the Japanese government to assist the Maldives in disaster relief efforts.
During the ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chief Executive of the NDMA expressed gratitude to Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Takiuchi Midori, for her instrumental role in expediting the project. The collaborative efforts underscore a shared commitment to enhancing disaster resilience and safeguarding communities against unforeseen challenges.
As the project progresses, anticipation mounts for its tangible impact on strengthening the Maldives' disaster response infrastructure, ensuring a safer and more resilient future for all.
