The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has handed over water pumps donated by the Government of Japan under the Economic and Social Development Programme to five island councils. The beneficiary islands are R. Inguraidhoo, K. Kaashidhoo, M. Muli, AA. Feridhoo, and Th. Kandoodhoo.
The water pumps were officially handed over by NDMA Chief Executive Mr. Hisan Hassan to representatives of the respective councils. The pumps are intended to support flood mitigation efforts and enhance local disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
Under the first phase of the project, a total of 40 water pumps have been received, with 20 islands set to benefit from the initial distribution. Each island will receive two water pumps along with the necessary accessories.
The selection of beneficiary islands was based on assessments of islands that have not previously received water pumps from NDMA and have frequently reported flooding incidents in recent years.
This initiative forms part of NDMA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster response capabilities at the local level and build a more resilient Maldives in line with the Government’s policy priorities under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The second phase of the distribution will provide pumps to the following islands: HA. Ihavandhoo, HA. Dhidhdhoo, HA. Uligan, HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, N. Maafaru, R. Fainu, B. Kendhoo, Lh. Naifaru, K. Gaafaru, Th. Buruni, Dh. Hulhudheli, F. Magoodhoo, F. Bilehdhoo, GDh. Hoadehdhoo, and GDh. Kanduhulhudhoo.
