Commencement of Community Emergency Response Team Training in HA. Kelaa New

19 August 2026

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has today launched the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program in HA. Kelaa, aimed at equipping first responders for emergency situations.
According to the NDMA, this training is being conducted today and tomorrow in collaboration with the Kelaa Island Council, with the support of UNICEF. More than 30 participants, including council members and representatives from various island institutions and sectors, are attending the program.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a local-level initiative designed to train individuals to be the first point of response during emergencies. Upon completion of the training, these members will operate under the guidance of the Island Disaster Management Committee.
"The CERT training is a program focused on developing first responders at the island level. This will enhance the island's resilience and ensure there is a trained team ready to act in the event of a disaster or incident. It is a significant step toward strengthening the community's overall resilience," stated Hisan Hassan, Chief Executive of NDMA.
The NDMA further noted that following the completion of this training in HA. Kelaa, efforts are underway to extend the program to additional islands.
The CERT training is a vital component of the Community Based Resilience Building (CBRB) program, conducted by the NDMA to foster preparedness, increase local resilience, and build a well-informed community at the island level.
