On 24 March 2024, under the “Japan Grant Aid for the Economic and Social Development Programme (ESDP)” project, the Government of Japan today handed over equipment worth approximately USD 4.3 million (MVR 66 million) to the Maldives.
At the official ceremony held for this purpose, the equipment was handed over on behalf of the Government of Japan by the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Her Excellency Mrs. Ishigami Rumiko. The equipment was received on behalf of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) by Chief Executive Mr. Hisan Hassan. Under the first phase of the project, 40 fire pumps and 40 water pumps along with related equipment were provided.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Executive of NDMA, Mr. Hisan Hassan, highlighted that this assistance will significantly strengthen the Maldives’ efforts to respond to disasters and enhance long-term resilience. He also noted that the project will further support NDMA’s ongoing work to empower communities and strengthen decentralized disaster management systems. He expressed sincere appreciation to the Government of Japan for its continued support in enhancing disaster preparedness.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Ambassador of Japan emphasized that the project will ensure that essential resources required for disaster response are made available to the islands and communities that need them the most. She further noted that this assistance represents an important step in strengthening island-level resilience, safeguarding lives, and improving response capacity. The Ambassador highlighted the importance of preparedness, institutional strengthening, and investment before disasters occur, drawing on Japan’s extensive experience in managing natural disasters.
Japan has maintained a close partnership with the Maldives in reducing disaster risks. In this regard, Japan has previously provided significant assistance in 2015 and 2017 towards the establishment and development of NDMA. In addition, under Japan’s “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP),” support amounting to USD 89,900 has been allocated to provide two emergency support vehicles for use in Malé in 2025.
This assistance will further strengthen the Government of Maldives’ ongoing efforts to address risks associated with climate change, natural disasters, and fire incidents. It will contribute to building a more resilient and prepared nation. Furthermore, it will enhance the capacity of island communities to respond to emergencies, including flooding and fire incidents, and strengthen the overall effectiveness of NDMA’s operations.
